Hi,

A while ago I started working on a new version of BBE. I just found the code again so will try to pick it back up. Apparently I was trying to make it a bit more OO so it would be easier to extend yourself and easier to get up and running. I need to improve a bit more, and so far have only got up to setting up the boards, ships and displaying the initial turns.

Now might be a good idea for feedback if anyone wants me to consider adding other functionality. I am planning to add a scores part at some point, like shown on Mike's site, be it db or flat file. but other than that I'm not sure what to do with it. Any ideas are, as always, welcome.

Andy

I would like have ability send as plain text emails, as HTML emails (or maybe both in one?)
also, less text in the email, and at the page, its kind of confusing (I even couldnt find the message I sent Confused Laughing)

Another suggestion is make it more secure against cheaters, eather encrypt the data of the link, or use some formula for the curent shot.
What am I talking about?
Current link (the one that your opponent received after your shot) contains information of all ships, and at the end is information of your last shot. And that information is plain numbers x=4&y=5 and if your opponent see that u hit his ship, he simply can change those numbers so the shot would miss and continue game like nothing happend...not everyone would ever notised that...(I wouldnt atleast :S)

one more "wish" Wink
to make avalable something like "one-shot-prove" by using DB to store "sessions" with loggin shots, that would prevent "spam" that could accure if someone deside to use "back" button and then make shots over and over again...this will make the script send new email with each shot...that is "spam" Wink

That really is the problem with doing just vial the query string - you can just push the back button and fire again. If I don't use a DB to store the session, then I could always create a unique id and use that as a simple filename to store the state.... But if I did that, I might as well use a DB!

I haven't played with this script for a long while because I got a job. But I should start it up again!

I'm thinking that maybe I should offer the choice of using the URL or a DB for the game information and offer the choice of creating a GIF or a SVG image (because I need an excuse to play around with that format!) for the board information.

The work I had done really made the script broken up into different classes, but it started to get ugly. So I'm not sure as to whether I should continue with the OO approach or just go for regular require'd files... Guess I'll know when I play around with it some more. Smile

Hey there,

To be honest, I haven't picked it up for quite some time. Instead I worked on my other classes, such as the crop-canvas, image masking, and so on. But I may yet pick it up again because Lisa and I have been playing a fair bit at work recently. I might make it into a full-blown package, rather than (as is the trend with the rest of my classes) and object which people can include into their own code. Not sure yet. Smile

since this script "can" use database, maybe it would be the best to store sessions in the database and in the email send an url with the session ID, this way, the url would be 10 times shorter and 100% prove from cheating Very Happy

Hi,

Yeah, this is the way I was going to take it. Have an option so that the game can take place over url, store in a file or store in a database. That way it should cover pretty much everyone. Probably only keep scores if you're using a database, though.

I would like to start this little project up again - it was fun! I'll have to find time for it soon.
